31 And he hath filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship;
32 And to devise curious works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass,
33 And in the cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of wood, to make any manner of cunning work.
34 And he hath put in his heart that he may teach, both he, and Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan.
35 Them hath he filled with wisdom of heart, to work all manner of work, of the engraver, and of the cunning workman, and of the embroiderer, in blue, and in purple, in scarlet, and in fine linen, and of the weaver, even of them that do any work, and of those that devise cunning work.
11 鈥婣nd he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the 鈥嬧婰ord鈥嬧. And, behold, the 鈥嬧婰ord鈥嬧 passed by, and a great and strong wind rent 鈥嬧媡he mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the 鈥嬧婰ord鈥嬧; 鈥媌ut鈥 the 鈥嬧婰ord鈥嬧 鈥媤as鈥 not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; 鈥媌ut鈥 the 鈥嬧婰ord鈥嬧 鈥媤as鈥 not in the earthquake:
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧12 鈥婣nd after the earthquake a fire; 鈥媌ut鈥 the 鈥嬧婰ord鈥嬧 鈥媤as鈥 not in the fire: and after the fire a 鈥嬧嬧媠till鈥 small 鈥嬧嬧媣oice鈥.
鈥嬧13 鈥婣nd it was 鈥媠o,鈥 when Elijah heard 鈥媔t,鈥 that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, 鈥媡here came鈥 a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?
9 鈥婽hen I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But 鈥媓is word鈥 was in mine heart as a 鈥嬧嬧媌urning鈥 fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not 鈥嬧嬧嬧媠tay鈥.
鈥27 And I will put my 鈥嬧嬧媠pirit鈥 within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do 鈥媡hem.
16 鈥婣nd Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the 鈥嬧嬧婥hrist鈥, the 鈥嬧嬧婼on鈥 of the 鈥嬧嬧媗iving God鈥.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧17 鈥婣nd Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon 鈥嬧嬧婤ar-jona鈥: for flesh and blood hath not 鈥嬧嬧媟evealed鈥 鈥媔t鈥 unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
鈥32 And they said one to another, Did not our 鈥嬧嬧媓eart鈥 鈥嬧嬧媌urn鈥 within us, while he 鈥嬧嬧媡alked鈥 with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
26 鈥婤ut the 鈥嬧嬧婥omforter鈥, 鈥媤hich is鈥 the 鈥嬧嬧婬oly Ghost鈥, whom the Father will send in my 鈥嬧嬧媙ame鈥, he shall 鈥嬧嬧媡each鈥 you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
鈥13 Howbeit when he, the 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit of truth鈥, is come, he will 鈥嬧嬧媑uide鈥 you into all 鈥嬧嬧媡ruth鈥: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, 鈥媡hat鈥 shall he speak: and he will 鈥嬧嬧媠hew鈥 you things to come.
鈥14 He shall 鈥嬧嬧媑lorify鈥 me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew 鈥媔t鈥 unto you.
鈥8 And when he is come, he will 鈥嬧嬧媟eprove鈥 the world of sin, and of 鈥嬧嬧媟ighteousness鈥, and of judgment:
37 鈥嬧婲ow when they heard 鈥媡his,鈥 they were 鈥嬧嬧媝ricked鈥 in their 鈥嬧嬧媓eart鈥, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men 鈥媋nd鈥 brethren, 鈥嬧嬧媤hat鈥 shall we do?
6 鈥婣nd when Paul had laid 鈥媓is鈥 hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with 鈥嬧嬧媡ongues鈥, and prophesied.
17 鈥婩or the kingdom of God is not 鈥嬧嬧媘eat鈥 and drink; but 鈥嬧嬧媟ighteousness鈥, and 鈥嬧嬧媝eace鈥, and 鈥嬧嬧媕oy鈥 in the Holy Ghost.
13 鈥婲ow the God of hope fill you with all joy and 鈥嬧嬧媝eace鈥 in believing, that ye may abound in 鈥嬧嬧媓ope鈥, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
3 鈥媁herefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and 鈥媡hat鈥 no man can 鈥嬧嬧媠ay鈥 that Jesus is the 鈥嬧嬧婰ord鈥, but by the 鈥嬧嬧婬oly Ghost鈥.
8 鈥婩or to one is 鈥嬧嬧媑iven鈥 by the 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit鈥 the 鈥嬧嬧媤ord鈥 of 鈥嬧嬧媤isdom鈥; to another the word of 鈥嬧嬧媖nowledge鈥 by the same Spirit;
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧9 鈥婽o another 鈥嬧嬧媐aith鈥 by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of 鈥嬧嬧媓ealing鈥 by the same Spirit;
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧10 鈥婽o another the working of 鈥嬧嬧媘iracles鈥; to another 鈥嬧嬧媝rophecy鈥; to another 鈥嬧嬧媎iscerning鈥 of spirits; to another 鈥媎ivers鈥 kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of 鈥嬧嬧媡ongues鈥:
22 鈥婤ut the 鈥嬧嬧媐ruit鈥 of the 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit鈥 is 鈥嬧嬧媗ove鈥, 鈥嬧嬧媕oy鈥, 鈥嬧嬧媝eace鈥, 鈥嬧嬧媗ongsuffering鈥, 鈥嬧嬧媑entleness鈥, goodness, 鈥嬧嬧媐aith鈥,
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧嬧嬧嬧23 Meekness鈥, 鈥嬧嬧媡emperance鈥: against such there is no law.
5 鈥婩or our 鈥嬧嬧媑ospel鈥 鈥嬧嬧媍ame鈥 not unto you in 鈥嬧嬧媤ord鈥 only, but also in 鈥嬧嬧媝辞飞别谤鈥, and in the 鈥嬧嬧婬oly Ghost鈥, and in much assurance; as ye know what 鈥嬧嬧媘anner鈥 of men we were among you for your sake.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧6 鈥婣nd ye became 鈥嬧嬧媐ollowers鈥 of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much 鈥嬧嬧媋ffliction鈥, with 鈥嬧嬧媕oy鈥 of the Holy Ghost:
鈥嬧嬧嬧19 We鈥 have also a more 鈥嬧嬧媠ure鈥 word of 鈥嬧嬧媝rophecy鈥; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day 鈥嬧嬧媠tar鈥 arise in your hearts:
鈥21 For the 鈥嬧嬧媝rophecy鈥 came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God 鈥嬧嬧媠pake鈥 鈥媋s they were鈥 鈥嬧嬧媘oved鈥 by the 鈥嬧嬧婬oly Ghost鈥.
10 鈥婣nd I 鈥嬧嬧媐ell鈥 at his feet to 鈥嬧嬧媤orship鈥 him. And he said unto me, See 鈥媡hou do it鈥 not: I am thy 鈥嬧嬧媐ellowservant鈥, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: 鈥or the 鈥嬧嬧媡estimony鈥 of Jesus is the spirit of 鈥嬧嬧媝rophecy鈥.
6 鈥婣nd it came to pass as he prayed unto the Lord, there came a 鈥嬧嬧媝illar鈥 of fire and dwelt upon a rock before him; and he saw and heard much; and because of the things which he saw and heard he did 鈥嬧嬧媞uake鈥 and tremble exceedingly.
7 鈥婣nd it came to pass that he returned to his own house at Jerusalem; and he cast himself upon his bed, being 鈥嬧嬧媜vercome鈥 with the Spirit and the things which he had seen.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧8 鈥婣nd being thus overcome with the Spirit, he was carried away in a 鈥嬧嬧媣ision鈥, even that he saw the 鈥嬧嬧媓eavens鈥 open, and he thought he 鈥嬧嬧媠aw鈥 God sitting upon his throne, surrounded with numberless concourses of angels in the attitude of singing and praising their God.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧9 鈥婣nd it came to pass that he saw One descending out of the midst of heaven, and he beheld that his 鈥嬧嬧媗uster鈥 was above that of the sun at noon-day.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧10 鈥婣nd he also saw 鈥嬧嬧媡welve鈥 others following him, and their brightness did exceed that of the stars in the firmament.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧11 鈥婣nd they came down and went forth upon the face of the earth; and the first came and 鈥嬧嬧媠tood鈥 before my father, and gave unto him a 鈥嬧嬧媌ook鈥, and bade him that he should read.
12 鈥婣nd it came to pass that as he read, he was filled with the 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit鈥 of the Lord.
鈥嬧嬧嬧13 鈥婣nd he read, saying: Wo, wo, unto Jerusalem, for I have seen thine 鈥嬧嬧媋bominations鈥! Yea, and many things did my father read concerning 鈥嬧嬧婮erusalem鈥嬧攖hat it should be destroyed, and the inhabitants thereof; many should perish by the sword, and many should be 鈥嬧嬧媍arried away鈥 captive into Babylon.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧14 鈥婣nd it came to pass that when my father had read and seen many great and marvelous things, he did exclaim many things unto the Lord; such as: Great and marvelous are thy works, O Lord God Almighty! Thy throne is high in the heavens, and thy 鈥嬧嬧媝辞飞别谤鈥, and goodness, and mercy are over all the inhabitants of the earth; and, because thou art merciful, thou wilt not suffer those who 鈥嬧嬧媍ome鈥 unto thee that they shall perish!
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧15 鈥婣nd after this manner was the language of my father in the praising of his God; for his soul did rejoice, and his whole heart was filled, because of the things which he had seen, yea, which the Lord had shown unto him.
6 鈥婣nd I was 鈥嬧嬧媗ed鈥 by the Spirit, not 鈥嬧嬧媖nowing鈥 beforehand the things which I should do.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧7 鈥婲evertheless I went forth, and as I came near unto the house of Laban I beheld a man, and he had fallen to the earth before me, for he was 鈥嬧嬧媎runken鈥 with wine.
17 And it came to pass after I, Nephi, having heard all the words of my father, concerning the things which he saw in a vision, and also the things which he spake by the power of the Holy Ghost, which power he received by faith on the Son of God鈥攁nd the Son of God was the Messiah who should come鈥擨, Nephi, was desirous also that I might see, and hear, and know of these things, by the power of the Holy Ghost, which is the gift of God unto gall those who diligently seek him, as well in times of hold as in the time that he should manifest himself unto the children of men.
19 For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost, as well in these times as in times of old, and as well in times of old as in times to come; wherefore, the course of the Lord is one eternal round.
22 And the Holy Ghost giveth authority that I should speak these things, and deny them not.
鈥45 Ye are 鈥嬧嬧媠wift鈥 to do iniquity but slow to remember the Lord your God. Ye have seen an 鈥嬧嬧媋ngel鈥, and he spake unto you; yea, ye have heard his voice from time to time; and he hath spoken unto you in a still small voice, but ye were 鈥嬧嬧媝ast鈥 feeling, that ye could not feel his words; wherefore, he has spoken unto you like unto the voice of thunder, which did cause the earth to shake as if it were to divide asunder.
鈥20 For behold, I have workings in the spirit, which doth 鈥嬧嬧媤eary鈥 me even that all my joints are weak, for those who are at Jerusalem; for had not the Lord been merciful, to show unto me concerning them, even as he had prophets of old, I should have perished also.
27 鈥婣nd it must needs be that the 鈥嬧嬧媝辞飞别谤鈥 of God must be with him, even unto his commanding you that ye must obey. But behold, it was not he, but it was the 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit鈥 of the Lord which was in him, which 鈥嬧嬧媜pened鈥 his mouth to utterance that he could not shut it.
鈥3 For my soul delighteth in 鈥嬧嬧媝lainness鈥; for after this manner doth the Lord God work among the children of men. For the Lord God giveth light unto the 鈥嬧嬧媢nderstanding鈥; for he speaketh unto men according to their 鈥嬧嬧媗anguage鈥, unto their understanding.
鈥嬧嬧嬧3 Angels鈥 speak by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, they speak the words of Christ. Wherefore, I said unto you, 鈥嬧嬧媐east鈥 upon the 鈥嬧嬧媤ords鈥 of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will 鈥嬧嬧媡ell鈥 you all things what ye should do.
1 鈥婣nd now I, Nephi, cannot write all the things which were taught among my people; neither am I 鈥嬧嬧媘ighty鈥 in writing, like unto speaking; for when a man 鈥嬧嬧媠peaketh鈥 by the power of the Holy Ghost the power of the Holy Ghost carrieth it unto the hearts of the children of men.
7 鈥婣nd I do this for a 鈥嬧嬧媤ise鈥 鈥嬧嬧媝urpose鈥; for thus it whispereth me, according to the workings of the Spirit of the Lord which is in me. And now, I do not know all things; but the Lord 鈥嬧嬧媖noweth鈥 all things which are to come; wherefore, he 鈥嬧嬧媤orketh鈥 in me to do according to his 鈥嬧嬧媤ill鈥.
14 鈥婣nd in the 鈥嬧嬧媠trength鈥 of the Lord they did contend against their enemies, until they had slain many thousands of the Lamanites. And it came to pass that they did contend against the Lamanites until they had driven them out of all the lands of their 鈥嬧嬧媔nheritance鈥.

10 鈥婣nd while I was thus struggling in the spirit, behold, the voice of the Lord came into my 鈥嬧嬧媘ind鈥 again, saying: I will visit thy brethren according to their diligence in keeping my commandments. I have 鈥嬧嬧媑iven鈥 unto them this land, and it is a holy land; and I 鈥嬧嬧媍urse鈥 it not save it be for the cause of iniquity; wherefore, I will visit thy brethren according as I have said; and their 鈥嬧嬧媡ransgressions鈥 will I bring down with sorrow upon their own heads.
2 鈥婣nd they all cried with one voice, saying: Yea, we believe all the words which thou hast spoken unto us; and also, we know of their surety and truth, because of the Spirit of the Lord Omnipotent, which has wrought a mighty 鈥嬧嬧媍hange鈥 in us, or in our hearts, that we have no more disposition to do 鈥嬧嬧媏vil鈥, but to do good continually.
23 鈥婣nd now, he imparteth his word by angels unto men, yea, 鈥嬧嬧媙ot鈥 only men but women also. Now this is not all; little 鈥嬧嬧媍hildren鈥 do have words given unto them many times, which 鈥嬧嬧媍onfound鈥 the wise and the learned.
2 鈥婲ow 鈥嬧嬧媤e鈥 shall say no more concerning their preaching, except that they preached the word, and the truth, according to the spirit of prophecy and revelation; and they preached after the 鈥嬧嬧媓oly order鈥 of God by which they were called.
18 鈥婣nd it came to pass that Nephi and Lehi did preach unto the Lamanites with such great power and authority, for they had power and authority given unto them that they might 鈥嬧嬧媠peak鈥, and they also had what they should speak given unto them鈥
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧19 鈥婽herefore they did speak unto the great astonishment of the Lamanites, to the convincing them, insomuch that there were eight thousand of the Lamanites who were in the land of Zarahemla and round about 鈥嬧嬧媌aptized鈥 unto repentance, and were convinced of the 鈥嬧嬧媤ickedness鈥 of the 鈥嬧嬧媡raditions鈥 of their fathers.
鈥44 And 鈥嬧嬧婲ephi鈥 and 鈥嬧嬧婰ehi鈥 were in the midst of them; yea, they were encircled about; yea, they were as if in the midst of a flaming fire, yet it did harm them not, neither did it take hold upon the walls of the prison; and they were filled with that 鈥嬧嬧媕oy鈥 which is unspeakable and full of glory.
45 鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧嬧婣nd behold, the 鈥嬧嬧婬oly Spirit鈥 of God did come down from heaven, and did enter into their hearts, and they were filled as if with fire, and they could 鈥嬧嬧媠peak鈥 forth marvelous words.
7 鈥婣nd behold, an 鈥嬧嬧媋ngel鈥 of the Lord hath declared it unto me, and he did bring 鈥嬧嬧媑lad鈥 tidings to my soul. And behold, I was sent unto you to declare it unto you also, that ye might have glad tidings; but behold ye would 鈥嬧嬧媙ot receive鈥 me.
20 鈥婣nd ye shall offer for a 鈥嬧嬧媠acrifice鈥 unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit. And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I 鈥嬧嬧媌aptize鈥 with fire and with the Holy Ghost, even as the Lamanites, because of their faith in me at the time of their conversion, were baptized with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and they knew it not.
鈥20 Now this is the commandment: 鈥嬧嬧婻epent鈥, all ye ends of the earth, and come unto me and be 鈥嬧嬧媌aptized鈥 in my name, that ye may be 鈥嬧嬧媠anctified鈥 by the reception of the Holy Ghost, that ye may stand 鈥嬧嬧媠potless鈥 before me at the last day.
11 鈥婤ut he that 鈥嬧嬧媌elieveth鈥 these things which I have spoken, him will I visit with the manifestations of my Spirit, and he shall 鈥嬧嬧媖now鈥 and bear record. For because of my Spirit he shall 鈥嬧嬧媖now鈥 that these things are 鈥嬧嬧媡rue鈥; for it persuadeth men to do good.
9 鈥婣nd their meetings were 鈥嬧嬧媍onducted鈥 by the church after the manner of the workings of the Spirit, and by the 鈥嬧嬧媝辞飞别谤鈥 of the Holy Ghost; for as the power of the Holy Ghost led them whether to preach, or to exhort, or to pray, or to supplicate, or to sing, even so it was done.
13 鈥婤ut behold, that which is of God inviteth and enticeth to do 鈥嬧嬧媑ood鈥 continually; wherefore, every thing which inviteth and 鈥嬧嬧媏nticeth鈥 to do 鈥嬧嬧媑ood鈥, and to love God, and to serve him, is 鈥嬧嬧媔nspired鈥 of God.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧16 鈥婩or behold, the 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit of Christ鈥 is given to every 鈥嬧嬧媘an鈥, that he may 鈥嬧嬧媖now鈥 good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God.
17 鈥婤ut whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do evil, and believe not in Christ, and deny him, and serve not God, then ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of the devil; for after this manner doth the devil work, for he persuadeth no man to do good, no, not one; neither do his angels; neither do they who subject themselves unto him.

32 鈥婣nd by so doing, the Lord God prepareth the way that the 鈥嬧嬧媟esidue鈥 of men may have 鈥嬧嬧媐aith鈥 in Christ, that the Holy Ghost may have place in their hearts, according to the power thereof; and after this manner bringeth to pass the Father, the covenants which he hath made unto the children of men.
3 鈥婤ehold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how 鈥嬧嬧媘erciful鈥 the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and 鈥嬧嬧媝onder鈥 it in your 鈥嬧嬧媓earts鈥.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧4 鈥婣nd when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would 鈥嬧嬧媋sk鈥 God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not 鈥嬧嬧媡rue鈥; and if ye shall ask with a 鈥嬧嬧媠incere heart鈥, with 鈥嬧嬧媟eal intent鈥, having 鈥嬧嬧媐aith鈥 in Christ, he will 鈥嬧嬧媘anifest鈥 the 鈥嬧嬧媡ruth鈥 of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.
5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may 鈥嬧嬧媖now鈥 the 鈥嬧嬧媡ruth鈥 of all things.
6 鈥婣nd whatsoever thing is good is 鈥嬧媕ust and true; wherefore, nothing that is good denieth the Christ, but acknowledgeth that he is.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧7 鈥婣nd ye may 鈥嬧嬧媖now鈥 that he is, by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore I would exhort you that ye deny not the power of God; for he worketh by power, 鈥嬧嬧媋ccording鈥 to the faith of the children of men, the same today and tomorrow, and forever.
8 鈥婣nd again, I exhort you, my brethren, that ye deny not the 鈥嬧嬧媑ifts鈥 of God, for they are many; and they come from the same God. And there are 鈥嬧嬧媎ifferent鈥 ways that these gifts are administered; but it is the same God who worketh all in all; and they are given by the manifestations of the 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit鈥 of God unto men, to profit them.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧9 鈥嬧嬧嬧婩or鈥 behold, to one is given by the Spirit of God, that he may 鈥嬧嬧媡each鈥 the word of wisdom;
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧10 鈥婣nd to another, that he may 鈥嬧嬧媡each鈥 the word of 鈥嬧嬧媖nowledge鈥 by the same Spirit;
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧11 鈥婣nd to another, exceedingly great 鈥嬧嬧媐aith鈥; and to another, the gifts of 鈥嬧嬧媓ealing鈥 by the same Spirit;
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧12 鈥婣nd again, to another, that he may work mighty 鈥嬧嬧媘iracles鈥;
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧13 鈥婣nd again, to another, that he may prophesy concerning all things;
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧14 鈥婣nd again, to another, the beholding of angels and ministering spirits;
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧15 鈥婣nd again, to another, all kinds of tongues;
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧16 鈥婣nd again, to another, the interpretation of 鈥嬧嬧媗anguages鈥 and of divers kinds of tongues.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧17 鈥婣nd all these gifts come by the Spirit of Christ; and they come unto every man severally, according as he will.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧18 鈥婣nd I would exhort you, my beloved brethren, that ye remember that 鈥嬧嬧媏very鈥 good 鈥嬧嬧媑ift鈥 cometh of Christ.
25 鈥婣nd wo be unto the children of men if this be the case; for there shall be 鈥嬧嬧媙one鈥 that doeth good among you, no not one. For if there 鈥嬧媌e one among you that doeth good, he shall work by the power and gifts of God.
14 鈥媀erily, verily, I say unto thee, 鈥嬧媌lessed art thou for what thou hast done; for thou hast 鈥嬧嬧媔nquired鈥 of me, and behold, as often as thou hast inquired thou hast received instruction of my Spirit. If it had not been so, thou wouldst not have come to the place where thou art at this time.
15 鈥婤ehold, thou knowest that thou hast inquired of me and I did enlighten thy 鈥嬧嬧媘ind鈥; and now I tell thee these things that thou mayest know that thou hast been 鈥嬧嬧媏nlightened鈥 by the 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit of truth鈥;
23 鈥婣nd now, behold, you have received a 鈥嬧嬧媤itness鈥; for if I have 鈥嬧嬧媡old鈥 you things which no man knoweth have you not received a witness?
24 鈥婦id I not speak 鈥嬧嬧媝eace鈥 to your mind concerning the matter? What greater 鈥嬧嬧媤itness鈥 can you have than from God?
2 鈥媃ea, behold, I will 鈥嬧嬧媡ell鈥 you in your mind and in your 鈥嬧嬧媓eart鈥, by the 鈥嬧嬧婬oly Ghost鈥, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧3 鈥婲ow, behold, this is the spirit of revelation; behold, this is the spirit by which Moses 鈥嬧嬧媌rought鈥 the children of Israel through the Red Sea on dry ground.
8 鈥婤ut, behold, I say unto you, that you must 鈥嬧嬧媠tudy鈥 it out in your 鈥嬧嬧媘ind鈥; then you must 鈥嬧嬧媋sk鈥 me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your 鈥嬧嬧媌osom鈥 shall 鈥嬧嬧媌urn鈥 within you; therefore, you shall 鈥嬧嬧媐eel鈥 that it is right.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧9 鈥婤ut if it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a 鈥嬧嬧媠tupor鈥 of thought that shall cause you to forget the thing which is wrong; therefore, you cannot write that which is 鈥嬧嬧媠acred鈥 save it be given you from me.
12 鈥婣nd now, verily, verily, I say unto thee, put your 鈥嬧嬧媡rust鈥 in that 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit鈥 which 鈥嬧嬧媗eadeth鈥 to do 鈥嬧嬧媑ood鈥嬧攜ea, to do 鈥嬧嬧媕ustly鈥, to walk 鈥嬧嬧媓umbly鈥, to 鈥嬧嬧媕udge鈥 righteously; and this is my Spirit.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧13 鈥媀erily, verily, I say unto you, I will impart unto you of my Spirit, which shall 鈥嬧嬧媏nlighten鈥 your 鈥嬧嬧媘ind鈥, which shall fill your soul with 鈥嬧嬧媕oy鈥;
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧14 鈥婣nd then shall ye know, or by this shall you know, all things whatsoever you desire of me, which are pertaining unto things of 鈥嬧嬧媟ighteousness鈥, in faith believing in me that you shall receive.
8 鈥婣nd it shall come to pass, that if you shall ask the Father in my name, in faith 鈥嬧嬧媌elieving鈥, you shall receive the 鈥嬧嬧婬oly Ghost鈥, which 鈥嬧嬧媑iveth鈥 utterance, that you may stand as a 鈥嬧嬧媤itness鈥 of the things of which you shall both 鈥嬧嬧媓ear鈥 and see, and also that you may declare 鈥嬧嬧媟epentance鈥 unto this generation.
34 鈥婽hese 鈥嬧嬧媤ords鈥 are not of men nor of man, but of me; wherefore, you shall testify they are of me and not of man;
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧35 鈥婩or it is my 鈥嬧嬧媣oice鈥 which speaketh them unto you; for they are given by my Spirit unto you, and by my power you can read them one to another; and save it were by my power you could not have them;
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧36 鈥媁herefore, you can 鈥嬧嬧媡estify鈥 that you have 鈥嬧嬧媓eard鈥 my voice, and know my words.
60 鈥婨very 鈥嬧嬧媏lder鈥, 鈥嬧嬧媝riest鈥, teacher, or deacon is to be 鈥嬧嬧媜rdained鈥 鈥嬧嬧媋ccording鈥 to the gifts and callings of God unto him; and he is to be 鈥嬧嬧媜rdained鈥 by the power of the Holy Ghost, which is in the one who ordains him.
16 鈥婣nd the Book of Mormon and the holy scriptures are given of me for your 鈥嬧嬧媔nstruction鈥; and the power of my 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit鈥 鈥嬧嬧媞uickeneth鈥 all things.
16 鈥婣nd as ye shall lift up your voices by the 鈥嬧嬧婥omforter鈥, ye shall speak and prophesy as seemeth me good;
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧17 鈥婩or, behold, the 鈥嬧嬧婥omforter鈥 knoweth all things, and 鈥嬧嬧媌eareth鈥 record of the Father and of the Son.
鈥2 But notwithstanding those things which are written, it always has been given to the 鈥嬧嬧媏lders鈥 of my church from the beginning, and ever shall be, to 鈥嬧嬧媍onduct鈥 all meetings as they are directed and guided by the Holy Spirit.
13 鈥婽o some it is given by the 鈥嬧嬧婬oly Ghost鈥 to know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that he was crucified for the sins of the world.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧14 鈥婽o others it is given to 鈥嬧嬧媌elieve鈥 on their words, that they also might have eternal life if they continue faithful.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧15 鈥婣nd again, to some it is given by the Holy Ghost to know the 鈥嬧嬧媎ifferences鈥 of administration, as it will be pleasing unto the same Lord, according as the Lord will, suiting his 鈥嬧嬧媘ercies鈥 according to the conditions of the children of men.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧16 鈥婣nd again, it is given by the Holy Ghost to some to know the diversities of operations, whether they be of God, that the manifestations of the 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit鈥 may be given to every man to profit withal.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧17 鈥婣nd again, verily I say unto you, to some is given, by the Spirit of God, the word of 鈥嬧嬧媤isdom鈥.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧18 鈥婽o another is given the word of 鈥嬧嬧媖nowledge鈥, that all may be taught to be wise and to have knowledge.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧19 鈥婣nd again, to some it is given to have 鈥嬧嬧媐aith鈥 to be healed;
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧20 鈥婣nd to others it is given to have faith to 鈥嬧嬧媓eal鈥.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧21 鈥婣nd again, to some is given the working of 鈥嬧嬧媘iracles鈥;
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧22 鈥婣nd to others it is given to 鈥嬧嬧媝rophesy鈥;
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧23 鈥婣nd to others the 鈥嬧嬧媎iscerning鈥 of spirits.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧24 鈥婣nd again, it is given to some to speak with 鈥嬧嬧媡ongues鈥;
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧25 鈥婣nd to another is given the interpretation of tongues.
28 鈥婣nd it shall come to pass that he that asketh in 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit鈥 shall receive in Spirit;
30 He that 鈥嬧嬧媋sketh鈥 in the 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit鈥 asketh according to the 鈥嬧嬧媤ill鈥 of God; 鈥嬧媤herefore it is done even as he asketh.
鈥32 And ye must give 鈥嬧嬧媡hanks鈥 unto God in the Spirit for whatsoever blessing ye are blessed with.
21 鈥婽herefore, why is it that ye cannot understand and know, that he that receiveth the word by the 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit of truth鈥 receiveth it as it is preached by the Spirit of truth?
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧22 鈥媁herefore, he that preacheth and he that receiveth, understand one another, and both are 鈥嬧嬧媏dified鈥 and 鈥嬧嬧媟ejoice鈥 together.
24 鈥婽hat which is of God is 鈥嬧嬧媗ight鈥; and he that 鈥嬧嬧媟eceiveth鈥 鈥嬧嬧媗ight鈥, and 鈥嬧嬧媍ontinueth鈥 in God, receiveth more 鈥嬧嬧媗ight鈥; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.
45 鈥婩or the 鈥嬧嬧媤ord鈥 of the Lord is truth, and whatsoever is truth is 鈥嬧嬧媗ight鈥, and whatsoever is light is 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit鈥, even the Spirit of Jesus Christ.
46 鈥婣nd the 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit鈥 giveth 鈥嬧嬧媗ight鈥 to 鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧媏very man鈥 that cometh into the world; and the Spirit enlighteneth every man through the world, that hearkeneth to the voice of the Spirit.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧47 鈥婣nd every one that hearkeneth to the voice of the Spirit 鈥嬧嬧媍ometh鈥 unto God, even the Father.
鈥85 Neither take ye thought beforehand 鈥嬧嬧媤hat鈥 ye shall say; but 鈥嬧嬧媡reasure鈥 up in your minds continually the words of life, and it shall be 鈥嬧嬧媑iven鈥 you in the very hour that portion that shall be meted unto every man.
88 鈥婣nd whoso 鈥嬧嬧媟eceiveth鈥 you, there I will be also, for I will go 鈥嬧嬧媌efore鈥 your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit鈥 shall be in your hearts, and mine 鈥嬧嬧媋ngels鈥 round about you, to bear you up.
6 鈥媃ea, thus saith the 鈥嬧嬧媠till small voice鈥, which whispereth through and 鈥嬧嬧媝ierceth鈥 all things, and often times it maketh my bones to quake while it maketh manifest, saying:
鈥11 And the light which shineth, which giveth you light, is through him who enlighteneth your eyes, which is the same light that quickeneth your 鈥嬧嬧媢nderstandings鈥;
49 鈥婽he 鈥嬧嬧媗ight鈥 shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehendeth it not; nevertheless, the day shall come when you shall 鈥嬧嬧媍omprehend鈥 even God, being quickened in him and by him.
28 鈥婬e that 鈥嬧嬧媖eepeth鈥 his commandments receiveth 鈥嬧嬧媡ruth鈥 and 鈥嬧嬧媗ight鈥, until he is glorified in truth and 鈥嬧嬧媖noweth鈥 all things.
37 鈥婰ight and truth forsake that 鈥嬧嬧媏vil one鈥.
2 鈥婣nd who 鈥嬧嬧媟eceiveth鈥 you receiveth me; and you shall have power to declare my word in the 鈥嬧嬧媎emonstration鈥 of my Holy Spirit.
10 鈥婣nd I will give unto him power to be mighty in 鈥嬧嬧媡estimony鈥.
鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧11 鈥婣nd I will give unto thee power to be 鈥嬧嬧媘ighty鈥 in expounding all scriptures, that thou mayest be a spokesman unto him, and he shall be a 鈥嬧嬧媟evelator鈥 unto thee, that thou mayest know the certainty of all things 鈥嬧嬧媝ertaining鈥 to the things of my kingdom on the earth.
鈥1 As I stated to you in my letter before I left my place, that I would write to you from time to time and give you information in relation to many subjects, I now resume the subject of the 鈥嬧嬧媌aptism鈥 for the dead, as that subject seems to occupy my mind, and press itself upon my feelings the strongest, since I have been pursued by my enemies.
22 The 鈥嬧嬧婩ather鈥 has a 鈥嬧嬧媌ody鈥 of flesh and bones as tangible as man鈥檚; the Son also; but the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit鈥. Were it not so, the Holy Ghost could not 鈥嬧嬧媎well鈥 in us.
鈥33 For my 鈥嬧嬧婼pirit鈥 is sent forth into the world to enlighten the 鈥嬧嬧媓umble鈥 and contrite, and to the 鈥嬧嬧媍ondemnation鈥 of the ungodly.
12 鈥婲ever did any passage of 鈥嬧嬧媠cripture鈥 come with more power to the heart of man than this did at this time to mine. It seemed to enter with great force into every feeling of my heart. I reflected on it again and again, knowing that if any person needed 鈥嬧嬧媤isdom鈥 from God, I did; for how to act I did not know, and unless I could get more wisdom than I then had, I would never know; for the teachers of religion of the different sects 鈥嬧嬧媢nderstood鈥 the same passages of scripture so differently as to destroy all confidence in settling the question by an appeal to the Bible.
In answer to the question 鈥淗ow do we recognize the promptings of the Spirit?鈥 President Gordon B. Hinckley read and then said: 鈥淭hat鈥檚 the test, when all is said and done. Does it persuade one to do good, to rise, to stand tall, to do the right thing, to be kind, to be generous? Then it is of the Spirit of God. 鈥
鈥淚f it invites to do good, it is of God. If it inviteth to do evil, it is of the devil. 鈥 And if you are doing the right thing and if you are living the right way, you will know in your heart what the Spirit is saying to you.
鈥淵ou recognize the promptings of the Spirit by the fruits of the Spirit鈥攖hat which enlighteneth, that which buildeth up, that which is positive and affirmative and uplifting and leads us to better thoughts and better words and better deeds is of the Spirit of God鈥 (Teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley, 260鈥61).
President Dallin H. Oaks, in responding to a sincere man who claimed never to have had such an experience, counseled, 鈥淧erhaps your prayers have been answered again and again, but you have had your expectations fixed on a sign so grand or a voice so loud that you think you have had no answer.鈥 The Savior Himself spoke of a people with great faith who 鈥渨ere [blessed] with fire and with the Holy Ghost, [but who] knew it not.鈥
The Holy Ghost will also provide revelation in our callings and assignments. In my experience, significant spiritual guidance most often comes when we are trying to bless others in fulfilling our responsibilities.
Nephi鈥檚 efforts to obtain the plates of brass show how the principles work. When the older brethren were asked to go, they 鈥渕urmured鈥 and received no help. Nephi was assured, 鈥淭hou shalt be favored of the Lord, because thou hast not murmured.鈥 (鈥1 Ne. 3:6鈥.) Nephi鈥檚 words, 鈥淚 will go and do,鈥 reveal a positive commitment to act and to succeed by using spiritual law. (鈥1 Ne. 3:7鈥.)
鈥嬧嬧嬧婣fter two unsuccessful attempts, Nephi remained confident. He crept into the city toward the house of Laban without all the answers. He observed, 鈥淚 was led by the Spirit, not knowing beforehand the things which I should do,鈥 significantly adding, 鈥鈥淣evertheless I went forth.鈥濃 (鈥1 Ne. 4:6鈥7鈥; italics added.)
鈥嬧嬧嬧婲ephi was willing to try time and again, using his best efforts. He expressed faith that he would be helped. He refused to be discouraged. But because he acted, had confidence in the Lord, was obedient, and properly used his agency, he received guidance. He was inspired step after step to success, and in his mother鈥檚 words was 鈥済iven 鈥 鈥媝辞飞别谤鈥 [to] accomplish the thing which the Lord hath commanded.鈥 (鈥1 Ne. 5:8鈥; italics added.)
鈥嬧嬧嬧婲ephi knew he was required to confide in God, to exercise faith, and to act so that he could receive help, step by step. He did not murmur nor ask for a full explanation. But, observe particularly, he did not wait passively for help. He acted! By following spiritual law, he was inspired and given power to act.
When we seek inspiration to help make decisions, the Lord gives gentle promptings. These require us to think, to exercise faith, to work, to struggle at times, and to act. Seldom does the whole answer to a decisively important matter or complex problem come all at once. More often, it comes a piece at a time, without the end in sight.
